TRUE DETECTIVE --Harsha Evani

'Human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution, we are creatures who should not exist by natural law'⁣

The more I read these lines, the more haunting they seem and mind you these lines are not from a treatise on philosophy but from a mere cop-show. So why is this cop show lecturing us on philosophy and questioning our existence, isn’t that the work of art house cinema. What makes it so different from the rest of the cop shows which have been on TV from the past few decades?⁣

This epic crime drama by Nic Pizzolatto is a masterpiece that comes once in a life time, so great that it becomes hard for the creator to make something of such magnitude again.⁣

True detective Season 1 is the potrayal of the eventual decay of humanity. It is not just about the case which is being investigated, its about the vulnerability of man who falls into the circle of time, doing things again and again till death stops him.⁣

It’s about what we make of ourselves while stay in the circle. We don’t have to be a ‘Marty’ who spews ignorance and refuses to acknowledge the faults within and neither do we have to be a ‘Rust’ who is so detached from the world inside the circle that he just threads along the circumference, not allowing himself to fall into it, thereby convincing himself that the darkness he sees on the circumference is the only thing that exists. Anything beyond that is meaningless because it doesn’t mean anything to him.⁣

Even though Rust is pessimistic, he has a willingness to speak openly about ideas common to us all, but ones we are usually expected to suppress. He makes some solid points such as questioning the institution of religion which has done more harm to us than anything else, he despises Marty’s infidelity and even mocks him on such occassions.⁣

The show is obviously a great masterpiece and something which is great lives on forever unhindered by the test of time. The beauty of True Detective lies in the fact that it remains true to itself till the very end, thereby committing to itself. This commitment is great because it shows a satisfying change at the very end, a change we all long for, a change which is very important.⁣
